Miami-Dade County-based Curaleaf, the medical-marijuana arm of Costa Farms, has opened the doors to its first retail location in Palm Beach County.

At 1125 N. Dixie Highway, Suite C, in Lake Worth, Curaleaf will sell a variety of THC-based products aimed that treating symptoms of ailments. THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the chemical compound found in marijuana that, in certain doses, is responsible for a euphoric high.

Visitors to any dispensary are required to show a State of Florida medical marijuana card to obtain medical cannabis products. Today, more than 60,000 people in Florida are registered with the Office of Medical Marijuana Use, under the state Department of Health.

Formerly known as Modern Health Concepts, Curaleaf today operates three dispensaries in South Florida – two in Miami-Dade County, and now one in Lake Worth, in Palm Beach. Members of the media were invited to the new retail location on Wednesday.

Curaleaf is one of 12 companies in Florida currently licensed to grow, process, distribute and sell medical marijuana.

While medical marijuana is legal statewide to patients with “recommendations” from licensed doctors, the substance remains illegal at the federal level. Meanwhile, numerous city governments across Florida, such as Deerfield Beach, are still grappling with how to implement a medical marijuana industry in their communities.

“As one of the first medical cannabis licensees in Florida, Curaleaf is committed to making this life-changing treatment available and accessible to all, so that suffering patients can find true relief,” said Curaleaf Florida president Lindsay Jones. “We are proud to open our state-of-the-art dispensary in Lake Worth.”

Another licensed medical marijuana provider, Knox Medical, also operates a dispensary in Lake Worth. No dispensaries are open yet in Broward County.
